Until now the only iBeacons available have been using Apples specifications. All that has changed with the announcement from Google of the Eddystone beacon open source format. Google is making this an open source project to make it accessible to everyone. They didn't announce any hardware, this is a set of specifications for a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device that can be used by any device. The device just has to support BLE. Google are not charging for this either, a number of manufacturers of iBeacons have signed up so we can expect Eddystone devices soon.
